The Russian composer Igor Stravinsky once said: ” A good composer does not imitate; he steals.”
I believe that what he meant is that it’s okay to apply a method that was that was developed by someone else and create your own. Imitating is to copy the technique or style of another but, somehow you don’t incorporate your own style and voice into the. Song Lyrics
Our ideas come from somewhere, whether it’s by accidently listening to a song of music and then saving it away or through a conscious action where we tell us: “This sounds great and I want to use it in my own music.”
Many people believe that all work must be unique, and that by this they mean there should have no influences from outside This isn’t the case. Haydn studied Beethoven. Italian composers also influenced Bach and on. Every composer, present and past around the world have influences, whether they acknowledge them or not.
Most of you know that I’ve had two main sources of inspiration: George Winston and John Herberman. You might or may not be aware of these men. It is important to acknowledge that they have influenced my style. How? because I enjoyed hearing them. It’s that easy.
When I am sitting down playing, I naturally choose one way and the opposite. I’m okay with that. That doesn’t mean that I’m not unique. It’s just that I accept the reality of things and don’t attempt to create “something original.” The thing that sounds novel is 99.9 per cent of the times, it’s a variation of something that has been done before.
The main idea I’m trying is this: Do not try to be different. Instead, concentrate on the things you love and like and your personal voice will be heard at the final. The music can be altered at a high level (innovation) or even an ounce (homage). Don’t try to imitate.
