There is an ongoing PBS TV series (furthermore several books in addition to a website) called “Closer To Truth”. It really is hosted by neuroscientist Robert Lawrence Kuhn. He’s highlighted in one-on-one interviews and panel discussions with the lotion of the lotion of today’s cosmologists, physicists, philosophers, theologians, psychologists, etc. on all the Big Issues surrounding a trilogy of wide topics – Cosmos; Consciousness; Meaning. The trilogy collectively handled reality, space and time, mind and consciousness, aliens, theology and on and on and on. Below are a few of my comments on one of the universal matters covered: The Universe.
Did our Universe have a newbie?
Did our Universe have a newbie? Well yes and no. Clearly the observational evidence factors to a Big Bang event approximately 13.7 billion years back – give or take. That Big Bang celebration was for several practical purposes, the beginning to your Universe. However, just like a person has a beginning, there is any such thing as a ‘before the man or woman’. So too there is a ‘before the Big Bang’ and durham university whatever that ‘before’ has been, it had a causality connection to your Universe, and therefore could be considered section of our universe or the mother or father to your Universe. A person is due to those that came before in causality human relationships and a new person cannot be considered an island without any reference to their ancestors. How come there need to be a ‘before the Big Bang’? It is impossible to create time and room since both time and area are concepts, not issues with structure and substance. If the Big Bang didn’t, in fact could not create time and place, and any cosmologist who indicates otherwise ought to be made to get up before an audience of her or his peers and create time (we could all work with a bit of extra time) and space (we could all use a little bit of extra space also) from scratch, and even present a theoretical equation that presents how either or both could be created from scratch, then the Big Bang event happened in existing period and in an already existing space. The concept of time only makes sense when you have a thing that changes and for that you’ll require things that change or quite simply things with substance and construction or quite simply matter and energy. The idea of space only makes sense if you have something, I stress the word thing, inside that area. So space existed prior to the Big Bang; time existed before the Big Bang; and matter and energy existed prior to the Big Bang too in order to give the concepts of pre Huge Bang time and room some real meaning. And in the event you were convinced that the Big Bang celebration created matter and energy to give that meaning to the time and the space in addition, it created, reconsider. Recall from high school science those conservation laws that were rammed down your throat, laws which to my knowledge have never been repealed, lawful restrictions which go something similar to this: “Matter (and vitality) can neither be designed nor destroyed but only changed in form”. Thus, yes, our Universe had a newbie, but it addittionally had a parent, a previous universe that contained each of the matter and energy which makes up our Universe.
What does an Expanding Universe Mean?
Before deciding what does an expanding universe really mean, if it basically has meaning, one has to determine which of two possible expansion scenarios may be the correct one, though I am aware that at present there is no actual observational experiment that can distinguish between the two. The current standard cosmological model has room itself expanding, the growth of room being driven by dark strength (whatever that truly is), an apparently intrinsic residence of space itself. Basically, space, and the dark energy of space is a thing, and space, being a thing, bears the galaxies in piggyback manner, like this overused analogy of paper dots pasted at first glance of an expanding balloon. I reject that typical model on the lands that it implies the continuous creation of something (dark electricity and space with composition and substance) from nothing at all, a pure violation of these conservation laws so much loved by physics. The alternative scenario is that the galaxies, subject and energy, are all expanding through existing space. Area in this scenario is not a thing, just the concept of a container that contains matter and energy in the form of galaxies. The galaxies are no more being carried piggyback by area than the bits and pieces that come flying out of an exploding stay of dynamite are being carried by the space they’re moving through. The galaxies, just like the bits and pieces of that exploded stick of dynamite, are moving through room. Now when that issue is decided, we’re in a better position to discuss meaning.
